Here in England.

Here is a beautiful piece of history from Warrington where I am staying with Dave and Jeanette Riley.

There are only two statues of Oliver Cromwell in England, one of them is in London, tucked away in a corner; the other is right here in Warrington, Lancashire.
Why here of all places?

This was the city that opened it gates and its hearts to the Round Head army as it pursued King Charles and his troops during the English Civil war.

Below is a photo of the most beautiful gates to be seen in England outside of the city of London.
They are at the entrance to Warrington City Hall. They were originally made for Buckingham Palace by the iron smiths of Warrington and were donated with the earnest good will of the city fathers.

When Queen Victoria found that they came from Warrington, she refused the gift. 250 years earlier Warrington had helped Cromwell to track down and behead Charles 1st and the Queen was "Not Amused"

Ah well, the city now boasts the finest set of gates in the realm and one of only two statues of Cromwell.

So much for sour grapes.

This week in England

I'm in Liverpool staying with friends. This city is home to the largest cathedral in Europe. Have a look.

 

It is an amazing testimony to thirty years of skilled and loving labor from an army of artisans and volunteer workers. Dedicated to God by a pious and learned man called Bishop Ryle. Now have a peek at this:
